Microphysical measurements of hydrometeors using shadowgraph imaging technique

Abstract The size distributions of raindrops and precipitation particles were measured in a series situ experiments during various weather events Warsaw, Poland. To perform the measurements, shadowgraph instrument, “VisiSize D30”, was set up on roof Institute Geophysics, University together with an “OTT Parsivel 2 ” laser disdrometer. VisiSize D30, recently introduced to atmospheric research, is capable accurately determining wide range particle sizes, from micrometre-scale cloud droplets millimetre-scale particles, while directly measuring by capturing shadow images them. A comparison data collected two instruments simultaneous measurements shows that combining technique optical disdrometer can prevent droplet distribution truncation provide more accurate results.
